Big Strings 2 features exciting works for 6-8 string instruments by composers Dmitri Shostakovich, Igor Stravinsky and Richard Strauss. The Stravinsky, Apolon Musagete (Apollo, Leader of the Muses), comes from his Neo-Classical period, during which the composer used the musical language and conventions of the seventeenth and eighteenth century to great effect. Strauss' Metamorphosen reflects upon the ravages of war, and Shostakovich's early work, Two Pieces for String Octet, exhibits the exuberance and energy of the young composer, already a master of his craft.
