Orchestra Assignments Policy
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
In an effort to establish a clear criterion for orchestra placement, the following policy has been adopted for placement in the four orchestras:

Vivace Orchestra

Vivace is the beginner group. Students who have had a minimal of instruction may begin in this group for their first ensemble experience. Students will not have to audition if they have been taking private lessons for a least a month. They will be considered as part of the HCYO organization and will be eligible for scholarships and instrument rental from HCYO.

They will remain in Vivace for at least one semester. When a Vivace student has achieved at least the level of Allegro in the first Suzuki Book, they may, at the semester with the approval of the conductors, move to Con Moto.

Technically prepare scales with separate bows, quarter note = 80. Prepare the C maj/A min; F maj/D min; & G maj/E min: for Cavatina 2 octabes

Con Moto Orchestra

Con Moto will be comprised primarily of students of Suzuki Books One and Two. The majority of players will be of the elementary school age.

Cavatina Orchestra

Cavatina will be comprised primarily of students in Suzuki Books three and four. The majority of students will be of junior high school age. Scales required: 2-octave C maj/a min, F maj/ d min, and G maj/e min played with separate bows, quarter note = 80 mm.

Hill Country Youth Orchestra

Hill Country Youth Orchestra will be comprised primarily of the most advanced students in the orchestra program. The majority of students will be of high school age. Scales required: 3-octave C maj/a min, F maj/d min, G maj/e min played with separate bows, quarter note Plus a 1-2 minute solo of your own choosing.

General HCYO

Changes in orchestra placement will be made at the semester only.

Movement to Cavatina or HCYO will be determined at the teacher’s and conductor’s discretion and may include an audition. An audition will not be the sole determining factor for placement in any of the orchestras. Maturity, sight-reading ability, over-all musicianship, leadership ability and student preference will all be taken into consideration.

New incoming students who have played before coming to our orchestras will need to interview with the HCYO and audition to determine correct placement.

It is most important that the policy be administered fairly and consistently and that the students learn to love music through the playing of their instruments with other students
